windows are left open
a slight chill has settled in
lovely aromas waift thru the air
Hearty soups simmering
warm bread from the oven
a nice cup of hot tea
curled up in a favorite chair
while reading one of the classics
a cozy sweater, a brisk walk
beautifully colored leaves
apple picking & pumpkins
a fire flickering in the fireplace
These are the days of Autumn
My youngest nephew starts us off with the last day of September, then it's my brother & sister-in-laws Anniversary on the first day of October ... a week later ... it's me, followed by my Dad, who sadly ... is no longer with us, as he passed away 6 years ago, although, he is still with us in spirit and we love to celebrate what a wonderful, kind & loving man he was with a hot cup of tea & two cookies, as that was his favorite thing to do! He is very much missed by our family ... and lastly ... my beautiful little sister who celebrates her birthday the last week of October.
These aren't all the birthdays we celebrate in our family, but just the ones who have clustered together ... during the wonderful season of Autumn!
Although ... cake & ice cream are the "norm" for most and have been for us too ... the "majority" of my family have choosen to politely "decline" cake and instead "ask", "beg" & "plead for Apple Pie ... now ... not any "ole" store bought apple pie will ever do ... Ohhh nooo ... it must come from my Mom's kitchen ... her "homemade" apple pie & crust are positvely devine ... and by far ... the best we've ever had ... and we just won't settle ... for anything less!
So ... yes ... I'm sure, you'll agree that Mom has her work cut out for her ... because baking an apple pie is truly a labor of love ... and not only do her loving "birthday" children & grandchildren want pie for their special day ... but an "individual" pie ... just for them, no less ... much too good to share ... and as you can well imagine ... there are never any left overs to reheat another day!!
She's also busy baking her "famous" pies for family & friends Holiday "get togethers" .... and although we are a very "loving" family (truly) ... she doesn't dare show up without them!

My brother was the very first to "request" a pie one year for his birthday, instead of a gift ... just goes to show you how valuable my Mom's pies are!! And once he received a pie ... the rest of us just jumped on the band wagon and requested the same ... no cake ... just pie, please ... and that is how our lovely "apple pie tradition" came to be!
Although, some of us have moved away from our home town and no longer live close enough to partake in each others festivities ... the lovely tradition of "blowing out candles" and cake or rather "pie" & ice cream ... will always have great meaning to us, as a family!
God's Blessing & wishing you a wonderful harvest ~ Lynn xo
